The wonder and enchantment of Christmas in the music of Messiaen
Olivier Messiaen, of course, was animated by a deep faith, who also provided the inspiration for much of his work.
In 1944, while violence raged on the war Paris, Messiaen wrote an impressive series of piano music of life more than two hours: These are Vingt Regards sur l'enfant Jesus . Debussy sounds in these songs are intertwined with complex compositional styles based on the use of leitmotif and manipulation of rhythmic-harmonic schemes. The result is enormous: the music of Messiaen transmits the force of passion that permeated his faith. In the song Première communion de la Vierge the enchanting sounds of birdsong crystal ornaments merge with the first heartbeat of the baby Jesus in his mother's womb creating a miraculous wonder.
